Going All Natural: Skincare and Makeup

We may earn money or products from the companies mentioned in this post.

I’ve been interested in transitioning to more being more environmentally friendly and natural products for some time. However, now that I’m a mom this transition feels even more urgent and important. Join me as I search for natural and non-toxic solutions for beauty & home. Today, let’s talk about natural skincare and makeup!

I had started looking into more natural skincare and makeup several years ago. Unfortunately at that time, most natural products were either very expensive, hard to find, ineffective or a combination of the three. It didn’t seem worth it to make the switch. Then last year when I got pregnant, I started reading about how much of what we interact with is absorbed into our bodies. If having too much caffeine could get my baby wired, what else could she be affected by?

This seems even more important now that she’s born. I hold my baby in my arms, against my skin for probably 10-14 hours a day. That means the things that go on my skin will end up on her skin and probably in her mouth too. As it turns out, I didn’t wear makeup hardly at all for the first couple of months of her life. But once she was a little older and life seemed a little more manageable, I was ready to try again. Except now, I was uncomfortable with the idea of her pressing her face against mine with a full face of makeup on. If you’re interested in some of the things I did use in those first few months, check out my post-baby essentials.

If you have looked into transitioning into more non-toxic or natural skincare and makeup products, you probably know there are lots of options nowadays. Even Target carries a variety of product lines. I will share with you what I’m currently doing and using, and what does and doesn’t work. Remember, this is an experiment for me too! If you have tips and tricks for making this transition, please share. I’m always open to suggestions, especially because I know so many people have already made the change.

My Current Beauty Routine

Over the last couple of years, I’ve already eliminated some problematic elements from my skincare and makeup routine. Here’s what I do and what works:

several natural skincare products on a counter
  1. Cleansing: I use Norwex face cloths to wash my face whenever I need it. All it takes is water, and they take pretty much everything off.
    1. If I have especially stubborn makeup like waterproof mascara or the like, I’ll use a little bit of castor and vitamin E oil to loosen it up.
  2. Moisturizer: I live in Arizona, SPF is VERY important. Right now, I use a SPF 30 moisturizer from Acure. Its quite sticky until it dries, but doesn’t seem to leave a white cast.
  3. Foundation: I just purchased the Bare Minerals Complexion Rescue tinted moisturizer. I’ve only used it a couple of times, but so far so good. It is quite moisturizing and you can build up for a bit more coverage but it’s pretty sheer.
  4. Blush: I have the Benefit Blush Bar palette which is great, but not a natural option. However, it wasn’t cheap! So I’ll continue using it for now.
  5. Brows: I use the Jordana Fabubrow pencil, which is decent, but I’m not sold on it. I’m looking for something new and natural.
  6. Treatments/Night Moisturizer: I use the solid serum from Acure 2-3 times per week all over, but otherwise I just throw on some CeraVe at night.

So – that’s where I’m at so far. The products I really like are the two Acure products and the Norwex face cloth. These will likely stick around in my routine as other items come and go. Do you use natural or non-toxic makeup or skincare? What are your favorite products? Share your recommendations below, I’d love to know what works for you – maybe it will work for me too!
