Best Binge-worthy Shows for New Moms
We may earn money or products from the companies mentioned in this post.
I would love to tell you that every time I fed my baby I pulled out a book but it’s just not true. At the end of the day, taking care of a newborn is hard work and in the early days, it can feel like you are feeding almost non-stop. In the three months since our Peanut arrived, I’ve run through a lot of options on Netflix, some good, some less good. You already have enough on your hands, so here are my bingeworthy shows for moms:
Call The Midwife
Get ready for some tears – this show has some tearjerker moments for new moms. I really love how it tracks not only the ways that prenatal and postpartum care change but also the social changes as the show moves from the early 50’s into the 60’s and beyond. Even the fashion adjusts to reflect the passing of time. I actually wish I had watched this before I delivered – it made me wish I’d worked with a midwife! You can see my other thoughts on labor and delivery in this post.
Grand Designs
We love a good home & garden show, so this fit right into our wheelhouse. Grand Designs is a BBC show that follows people building homes that are unique, interesting, challenging or downright crazy. Sometimes it’s painful to watch, but they build some beauties.
Outlander
Oh man, I resisted this show for years, but when I was getting to the end of my other series, I figured I should give it a try. It’s actually pretty good – escapist TV if nothing else. The scenery is gorgeous and the accents are something to behold. But be prepared for a few raunchy scenes and some nudity and some tense moments where sexual assault is suggested or implied.
The Great British Baking Show
I actually had already seen all of the episodes before baby, so this was a re-watch for me. Doesn’t that make this the ultimate pick of bingeworthy shows for moms? That being said, this show is addictive because the contestants are so likable. Baking, British accents, cute vignettes of sheep grazing, what more could you want? You can also check out some of the recipes to try for yourself here. (Editing to add as I publish – there’s a new season!)
Our Planet
I’ve always loved shows like Planet Earth and Round Planet (you really need to see that one if you haven’t). Our Planet is Netflix’s own earth focused documentary. The twist is a focus on how climate change is affecting the world and encouraging you to make a difference.
Queer Eye
I had never seen much of the original series, but this new Netflix ordered run is really phenomenal. Another tearjerker here. Be prepared to be moved as the Fab Five work with people from all walks of life to help them be the best version of themselves. Isn’t that what we’re all aiming for?
Miss Fisher’s Murder Mysteries
I love this show! Unfortunately, I think it’s about to leave Netflix, but I would recommend seeking it out before its gone, or finding it somewhere else to watch. Phryne Fisher is a thoroughly modern woman doing her own version of detective work Down Under. I’ve been googling to see when more episodes of this show will come out because I can’t get enough of it.
You’ll notice I left off some crowd favorites here – Stranger Things, Tidying Up with Marie Kondo, among others. While I really enjoyed those shows, I think it’s a certain type of show that lends itself to distracting you sufficiently during a nursing or feeding session, without requiring too much brainpower. These shows hit the mark for me and I hope you enjoy them, too. If you haven’t already, check out my post on the things I didn’t expect from postpartum recovery. What are your favorites? Share some of the shows you can’t help to binge below – I’m almost done with Call The Midwife!
