7 BIPOC Instagram Accounts You Need to Follow
We may earn money or products from the companies mentioned in this post.
We’re back again with another list of Instagram accounts that you need to follow. Today the focus is on Black, Indigenous, and People of Color. Now is a great time to find new creators and individuals and these accounts span all different interests and genres. Before we get into the 7 BIPOC Instagram accounts you need to follow, a couple of extra thoughts.
It’s important to note that you shouldn’t just follow accounts to “diversify” your feed, with no attention paid to the kind of account or type of content they put out. Take some time and look for accounts that feature your interests or fit in your niche. If you are curious as to why this matters, Dr. Jean Cheng of @jeanpsychologist has a great explanation:
Listening to “other’s” voices and work over time helps our unconscious (which must be given more time and patience) to catch up with our intellectual knowledge that we are all equal human beings. When we repeatedly encounter each other in person and on social media, somewhere in us, a quiet voice says, “Wow, we REALLY are the same. We have the same human needs, desires, dreams, pains. I knew it but now I believe it.” We become convinced at this deeper level, embody this truth, and consequently, our behaviours and openness to each other organically flows from this inner shift.
You can also check out the justice tab at the top of the page for more resources and recommendations. Now that we’ve got that out of the way, here’s my current favorites!
DressesAndCapes
Lauren is a wildly talented cosplayer, seamstress, and all-around creator. I’ve followed her for quite a while now and I am endlessly impressed by her recreations of popular characters from all over the fan universe. Because of the wide variety of fandoms she touches on, you’re sure to find something you like!
ColorMeMagic
Courtney is unbelievably talented. In addition to this Disney-focused account, she also runs @ColorMeCourtney and is a prolific creator who has cultivated an amazing and involved community. She also shares additional BIPOC instagram accounts you might like so a two-for-one deal here. Be sure you check out her stories – she posts brackets pitting fan favorites against each other to find a champion. I was dying for the Disney homes bracket – Haunted Mansion forever!
Obiaris
Next we have Obi Arisukwu. Obi is a talented illustrator, artist, and animator. He creates amazing pop culture portraits, and snarky animated comics like this one (language warning!). He did an amazing mashup of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle as Beyonce and Jay-Z that you need to see.
aminder_d
Aminder is the QUEEN of creating comics that just get under your skin. Perfectly relatable, sharp insights on society’s issues, and funny jokes all wrapped into her easy to absorb art style. I found her via her Woman World comics, which you can actually buy in full as a book. Her newest series is available for book preorder right now too!
ThisIsYolandaRenteria
Yolanda is a trauma therapist who unapologetically speaks out about mental health, societal and race issues. You might think this one isn’t for you, but her content is so timely and encouraging. She is intentional about deconstructing misinformation and sharing tools to help others clear up confusion. Plus she shares so much of her own knowledge generously for free.
LittleBlackBookNook
Dolisha runs this colorful account full of diverse book recommendations and reviews. Her insight as a curriculum specialist really makes a difference in her recommendations for kiddos. I especially like her curated sets of diverse books for certain events like “Back-to-School” as seen above.
HillHouseVintage
Oh, to be swept away on a daydream to live in Paula’s beautiful home and garden. As a creator and stylist living in the English countryside, Paula shares curated vignettes. They feature her lush garden, perfectly cozy home and fun vintage looks (plus cameos by Coco the labrador). Don’t forget to read her captions – she really gets genuine chuckles out of me on a regular basis.
Well that rounds us up for today! I hope these diverse BIPOC Instagram accounts caught your eye. I really encourage you to take a look at all of these accounts and take the time to find accounts that really work for you.
